a follow up

as an addition to an earlier post, another phrase that I do not like or possibly just don’t truely understand is “new and improved”.

According to webster:

new: having existed or having been made but a short time

improve: to make useful additions or amendments

These terms, especially as it applies to advertising are completely contradictory. If something is new, then there is no older version to which improvements could have been added. If it is improved, then an older version of the same thing existed and thus the item is not new.

not really working, but appreciated

From time to time, I find that my friends are trying to digitally set me up. So far, no replies. Isn’t that sad.

catching up

As things currently stands, the biggest hinderance to my constant posting is the fact that I have yet to figure out a way for the computer to just read my thoughts and make posts based on the knowledge it gains. I come of with things to say, then I don’t actually type them out.

So now, for a little while I shall be posting several small posts just to get them out there.

help wanted. enquire within.

I recently came into possession of an item. While I have some ideas what it might be used for, I don’t really know what it is. You can find pictures here, here, and here. One might be tempted to label it a bell, but it is missing the dinger (for lack of a better word). What I can tell you is that it is made of pewter, and the box it came in gives zero indication of what it might be used for.

Any insights you might have would be welcome, outlandish guesses are even more welcome.

while clicking the refresh button

Hello my name is Jonathan, and I am an addict.

I am officially (by which I mean unofficially) addicted to my refresh button, and revisting the various sites which have made their way to my main list of bookmarks. Some of you have sites, which I may single handedly be inflating the hit rate to. I just felt the need to check them all one last time before I went to bed, which might not seem to bad except that it is 4AM and I have already checked them post-midnight. I.must.stop.

and why would you say that?

What you are about to read should have been a real conversation between actual people who could actually see each other. This, sadly, did not happen. Someone, whom I shall not mention *cough*danny*cough*, ended its short life soon after I brought it into the world. I could not let it end there, and so I write.

There are some phrases that irk me. People use them, and I dislike them for it. Actually that isn’t true, but I really don’t like these phrases.

1) “s Best Kept Secret” – This can currently be seen on a sign outside of a building I pass every time I go to Anderson. Is it really a valid advertising method to promote your chosen establishment as a well kept secret? Is it, in fact, still a “secret” if you advertise it as such? Surely someone in Anderson has a secret that is slightly more hidden than the secrecy that is found on a public display.

2) “I could care less.” – This is simply wrong. You should examine your speech and realize that what you really mean is “I couldn’t care less.” This form expresses that you are totally lacking concern for whatever is under discussion, while the former form only indicates that you have yet to reach that total apathy. You could, in fact, be highly concerned.

3) “Up the creek without a paddle” – I know this is a well used expression (I have been know to use it), but I just don’t understand it. As it would seem to me, being UP a creek would not be the problem as the water would propel you downward. The problem would be being DOWN the creek without a paddle, as you would then have a complete disparity of locomotion options.

If I were you, I would expect more of these in the future. I know they are out there, but right now I believe they have run for cover and I must find them cowering behind some forgotten thought within my brain.

calling all patrols

After 5 long years of service, my bike has been *gasp* stolen. I just don’t know how this could have happened. The last time I saw it was on graduation day when, shortly after it decided to buck me off removing a generous portion of my hand, I abandoned it against a fense across from Little John. In the three short weeks since then, someone has managed to find it, determine that it was lacking in theft deterence and then abscond with it.

Farewell my little red bike without a seat, you served me well.

with happy fingers

I recently got a new toy for my computer. I had to wait over a month just to find someplace that had them in stock that was willing to sell it at a resonable price but it was worth it. It is pretty.

For those interested, it is a Saitek PZ30AU, and can be purchased from newegg.com.

joy.
