Tales of a Kidney Stone (Part 2)

This is the second of several posts concerning my kidney stone adventures. You can read the first part here.

At this point in my tale, I am 3 days into what turned out to be a little more a month of fun. One of the results of the second ER visit is that I acquired a filter in which to use to check for the stone. Let it make it abundantly clear, there is nothing convenient about having to use the restroom through a filter. This is especially true since I was under doctor’s orders to drink over a gallon of water a day and I work in an office building. It was interesting trying to figure out the various ways one might go to the restroom every 30 minutes without making it entirely obvious you are holding a bag containing a piece of plastic that may or may not smell of urine. Regardless, this status quo of normality lasted a couple of weeks. Nothing moved, nothing hurt, and certainly nothing important made its desired exit.

Then there was the third incident. Unlike the first two incidents, this one started during the day, while I was at work. Once again, I tried to ignore it. This might seem odd that I would trying to ignore something I knew would eventually get as bad as it does, but it had been two weeks and during that time I had become quite paranoid of any and all pain in my abdomen. Anyway, eventually (unfortunately just after I opened a bag of Doritos) the pain got bad enough that I knew it was definitely going to be another incident. Since I knew I didn’t want to be stuck and work, and that I had a limited amount of time to drive. I blew off lunch-time book club and jumped in the car. My thoughts at this point were to take some percacet and sleep. I made the decision not to go to the emergency room since I knew what was going on, all they really did was give me a shot, and I still had no idea what those visits were costing me (more on that later). This was quite possibly the worst decision I have ever made.

This concludes part 2, stay tuned for more.
