On the reliance of TV ads on terrible stereotypes
Amy and I were watching some TV this weekend. To be more accurate we watch the entire 9 hours of Star Wars prequels, movies which she had sort of seen but didn’t really remember. I should mention that this was her idea even. Seriously, how cool is that? Anyway, we were watching TV, and with TV comes commercials. It really is quite terrible how so many commercials rely on bad stereotypes. Watch a couple hours of TV and you are almost certain to see multiple examples of women who are seemingly completely focused on making the lives of men miserable. You will see examples of husbands lying to their wives to get out of the house, or wives treating their husband like idiots.
This actually ties into a much larger trend these days. In the name of feminism and comedy, culture has to a large extint turned men into villians. Where TV used to have shows like Leave it To Beaver or Andy Griffith or even Fully House or Family Matter which were both funny and entertaining, now we have King of Queens or The Simpsons. Gone are the idea that men can be intelligent, wise or an authority figure in homes, now they are being show as stupid, ignorant, self-seeking, and clueless.
Editor’s Note: I actually wrote the above two weeks ago, and then forgot to publish it. Well, today I found out I am not alone in my feelings here.
